Trish is Manager, Marketing, Communications and Events at Best Practice Software, one of Australia’s leading medical software companies, with its Head Office here in Bundaberg. She was recently awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Bundaberg and District Chamber of Commerce. “The Bundaberg Region is a wonderful place to do business, but it’s also a wonderful place to bring up a family, with a strong sense of community”.

Trish’s community connections straddle many sectors. She is Patron of Bundaberg Relay for Life, Chair of the Bundaberg Catholic Parish Stewardship Council, Secretary of Bundaberg Players Inc and sits on many committees, including the Bundaberg Health Services Foundation, UQ Rural Clinical School Community Advisory Committee, Moore Park Beach Business Collective and Moore Park Beach Veteran Car Rally Festival and is Co-Editor of the Moore Park Beach Shorelines magazine.

She has also been a Marriage Celebrant for the past six years and MCs many major events, including the visit by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales last year (where Paul Beutel captured this photo of Trish MCing). “Community connections are the glue that hold our region together” Trish said. “I love helping create and foster those connections. As individuals we can do a lot, but when we work together we’re unstoppable”.

It seems like it would be straight forward, but we all know that becoming successful is not as easy as it looks. It’s likely that you don’t have much money to invest in marketing, so what can you do in the meantime?

Here are 5 things you can do for FREE to start and grow your business:

• Create a brand with an obvious message and be consistent. Ensure you have a consistent brand message across all platforms including your website and social media channels.

• Develop a simple marketing plan and stick to it. Take time to learn about your customers and how your brand can solve their problems.

• Utilise the power of word of mouth. Current and past happy customers are your greatest advertisements. Word of mouth marketing costs nothing and is irreplaceable as an asset.

• Pay attention to social media. We cannot express the importance of this enough. Consistency and focus is important and these all need to reflect your brand.

• Network like a crazy person. Join in networking events, engage with other businesses online and do not be afraid to pitch your business to anyone and everyone.

Introducing Helen Tricarico, founder and owner of HOTI - Healthy On The Inside, a Bundaberg based small handcrafted beverage manufacturer producing ancient Kombucha with a modern twist using a range of exquisite teas and botanical herbs.

Fulled by passion and a desire to help others, Helen noticed a gap in the healthy beverage market in the Bundaberg Region so she launched HOTI in July 2016.

HOTI is the first commercially produced Kombucha in the Bundaberg Region and was recently awarded Micro Home Based Business of the year, has been featured in a number of articles including the News Mail, as a success story with the Females in Food Organisation, inspiring other women in food and drink and was recently listed in the top 50 Business Leaders in the Inside Small Business Magazine.

All I've ever wanted to do was help people (women
specifically) and I've always loved having businesses.

But I understand the struggle, the self doubt, the
uncertainty of how to make my business a success. This
led to my marketing company. I wanted to help women
take their dreams and make them into reality.

Since launching my marketing company I've had the
privilege of helping women not only grow their
businesses but also their confidence, strength and
determination to succeed. This has been the most
thrilling part of my journey so far.

Of course though, if you've met me...you know I'm an overachieving workaholic, so while helping my clients was
wonderful... it wasn't the end!

I had to help EVERYONE! ... and so evolved Her Umbrella Magazine.

So here we are, a group of passionate women, crazy enough to believe in ourselves and each other.

Introducing our first contributor for Her Umbrella Magazine Issue Three, Naomi Nicholls.

Naomi is a wealth creation specialist and passionate Financial Adviser providing quality advice for over 19 years. Naomi has assisted many clients to help take the stress out of managing money and achieve their goals sooner. She is motivated to help clients at any stage of life to build wealth, plan for & enjoy retirement and achieve their dream lifestyle.

Naomi believes that ‘the more that you understand about money the less you have to think about it. It’s about more than just finance, it’s about empowering others too’.

She is the Treasurer of the Zonta Club of Bundaberg and was also Event Organiser for the recent ‘Your Life, Your Choice - Workshops for Women’ held at CQUniversity which will become an annual event. She also adheres to the Financial Planning Associations code of ethics, is the Wide Bay chapter Treasurer and has previously been the Chapter Chair.

Women in small business are not strangers to operating on a shoestring. Any small changes you can make in terms of efficiency and cost effectiveness may transform into a huge asset. While there is no shortage of comprehensive business solutions and services online offering all manner of diverse features, these are often overkill for managing small companies.

These are the apps that Her Umbrella Magazine could not have been created without.

1. Ripl. We used Ripl to create super cute videos and slideshows to promote our magazine. If you saw us in a clip online, bets are, it’s made on Ripl!

We used their customizable templates to create eye-catching animated posts to get us noticed. We posted our designs to all our social accounts with one click or scheduled them to go live later. We also analysed our engagement, measured our success, then refined our posts for optimal results. Ripl also provides expert advice for your specific business type and recommendations on what to post.

2. Canva. Canva is a graphic-design tool website, founded in 2012. It uses a drag-and-drop format and provides access to over a million photographs, graphics, and fonts. It is used by non-designers as well as professionals. The tools can be used for both web and print media design and graphics. We used Canva to create Her Umbrella and were thrilled with the templates created specifically for magazines.

3. Dropbox. As you know, Her Umbrella is an entirely submission based online magazine. What that means, is an insane amount of logistics. To securely share, sync and collaborate all Her Umbrella files, Dropbox fit the bill. Not only were all of our articles uploaded via dropbox but so were all of our images. Dropbox safety was also a bonus – their security features let you control exactly who gets access to your files, wipe data when you lose a device and recover files if you need to.

You’ve come up with an amazing idea for a product or service. You’ve gone as far as building a website and creating a prototype, but now it’s time to get the word out. You want customers, and you also want everyone to know what you’re doing.

Maybe you already have a few people paying for your services. But just because a few bucks are trickling in doesn’t mean your business is really out there in the world.
Don’t worry- there are a million ways to let the world know about your awesome new company.

1. Be a (Genuine) Resource
You know a lot about your industry, right? That’s why you do what you do.
If you’re a respected resource, people will pay attention every time you release something new. They’ll respect your opinion, be more likely to give your product a shot, and even get excited about side projects you're taking on.

2. Find Outlets in Your City
Cities are great places to live because there’s so much going on, so DUH, you’ve got to find networking groups, visit some co-working spaces, and go to some events in the area.

But don’t limit yourself to startup-friendly events. There are other opportunities in your town, city, or state like parades, homecoming events, university ceremonies, or even local bulletin boards.

3. Start a Super Cool Blog (like this one!)
Think content marketing is a strategy you should think about down the road? Think again. Companies like 37signals and Crazy Egg have created super helpful blogs that put them on the radar screen. These companies don’t just have great products—they’re also leaders and resources in their fields. They provide extremely valuable information.
If you write well, offer honest tips, and put your sales-y pitches aside, your blog and website content can attract all sorts of visitors. Plus, if you write about other companies you admire and explain why, you might get a little attention from them too. (do you see what we have done there?)

If you want to get the word out about your company, you’ve got to... well... get the words out.
